If you’re a motorcycle rider, you must understand the risks that you face on the road. In many cases, it is not the motorcyclist who makes a mistake. Another driver commits an error and causes a crash. It is just the motorcyclist who suffers more serious injuries because they don’t have nearly as much protection.
One error that drivers often make is cutting off motorcycles or turning in front of them. In some cases, the motorcyclist will claim that the driver looked straight at them. At the same time, the driver will say that they never saw the motorcycle at all, so they didn’t even know they were cutting the bike off. What happened here?
How your brain processes information
This can be due to an issue known as inattentional blindness, which is related to the way that the human brain processes all of the information that it takes in. There’s a filtering process because it takes a lot of energy to actually look at every little detail. If someone takes a moment and focuses on what they’re looking at, their brain will pick up more details. But if they just look quickly, it fills in the gaps.
The problem with this is that the brain often just fills in the things that the person expects to see. Most people don’t ride motorcycles and don’t think about them, so they’re not looking for them. That’s why a driver can look at a motorcycle and not see it, as their brain filters it out.
If you’ve been hit by a negligent driver and suffered severe injuries, you may be able to seek compensation for lost wages, medical bills and much more. Be sure you know what legal steps to take at this crucial time.
